What is Monkeez?

Monkeez is a webcomic I started back in June of '02 completely without warning. It's based around the lives and jokes of my friends and I. It's raunchy, dirty, and down right funny. The characters aren't quite what their real life counterparts are, but that's because they've been distilled down to their various essences. Well, except the monkey, that's wishful thinking.

What is C316?

C316 is a webcomic I ran out of steam on back in January of '02. It is based around a particular Ac Dec team as they progress through their final year (and in some cases first year) of competition before graduating as seniors and the odd happenings that go on within. The name, C316, come from the number of the room which the team meets for class and meetings, see also the first comic. One should be prepared for insanity, over education, and snide comments.

What is Ac Dec?

Academic Decathlon (abbreviated to Ac Dec) is a ten-event competition based in the United States. It's basically a lot of studying for the purposes of taking tests, the scores of which are compared to other teams for the purposes of deciding a winner. Tests are graded on a score of 1-1000 and most of the tests are 50 question multiple choice. Teams advance through regional, state, and national competitions. At each level of competition, both teams and individuals are rewarded for high-ranking scores as well as cumulative totals.
Ok, that's the formal part of it. Most any kid who when asked the question "why are you in Ac Dec?" will say they really like the people. Ac Dec teams are congregations of weirdoes, nerds, geeks, goody-two-shoes, and megalomaniac iconoclasts, kind of like the internet. It's pretty much odd, made more odd by teammembers with too little time and too much sugar. For more information check out the USAD (United States Academic Decathlon) Website. The ten events are Speech, Interview, Essay, Language and Literature, Social Studies, Science, Math, Economics, Art, and Music. As well, one of these events is chosen as a Super Quiz.

About the Author

I am currently a freshman at Texas A&M Commerce. No, I'm not an Aggie, I'm a Lion. I'm an artist and a writer, and I play video games. I spent 4 years on an Ac Dec team and I've worked as a computer lab monkey. I think that about covers it.

How do you make the strip?

I hand draw all my characters, usually using a .5mm Pentel mechanical pencil on some cheap sketch paper I buy at the grocery store. Most of the strips that have characters in basically the same position get copied using my scanner so I can change the facial expressions for each panel. I don't ink usually, and sometimes I'm to lazy to color.

Where do get your ideas?

Like other comic creators I use my daily life. David and Jeff are pretty much like they are in the comic, or will be as more strips get put up. Usually when I'm driving or mowing a lawn or sitting at work, a 'gag' will appear fully formed in my head. From there it mulls about gets reshaped, rethought and hopefully the funny gets concentrated and made palletable. Usually when I sit down to do the comic, I don't have a formal strip and the dialouge doesn't really get written till I'm making the word balloons.
